mary's book basket ~ "never been kissed" by melody carlson

This book was a surprise and a pleasant one at that. Author Melody Carlson has tackled a very timely subject of "sexting" in this Christian Inspirational YA. She handles it with deftness and clarity. I was impressed with her honest and open approach to the subject. I had no idea how prevalent this activity is even in middle school. It is a message we all need to hear.

Product Description:
All Elise wants is to have her first kiss before she turns sixteen. Is that so bad? But when a friend's poor advice and the powers of electronic technology combine, Elise heads down a dangerous road. She is accused of "sexting" and gets kicked out of school. But is she really the one to blame?
This powerful and realistic story from beloved author Melody Carlson shows teen girls the impact of their choices when it comes to respecting themselves and their integrity. Honest and relevant, Never Been Kissed will make girls laugh, cry . . . and think.

I think Ms Carlson really hits a home run with book. The heroine Elise is unsure of herself having moved to a new school. She falls into the classic traps that peer pressure can present any teen. Along the way she discovers who she really is in God's eyes and fights back with grace and determination. I thought she was a bit too naive in the beginning of the book but once tested she didn't run away which was very satisfying to read.

The only part of the book I questioned at all was Elise's mothers reaction to the scandal. As a mother I was livid and not happy with the turn of events. Just being honest here. Other than that, I was drawn in from the beginning by the engaging dialogue and unfolding drama. I recommend this book for those 13 and older.

Happy Reading,
Mary
