mary's book basket ~ "on distance shores" by sarah sundin...

Reading On Distant Shores by Sarah Sundin was like stepping back in time. Sandin is known for her attention to the historic details. The Italian countryside comes alive playing a supportive role for the romance that slowly blooms between Georgiana and John.

From the Back Cover:

Caught between the war raging around them and the battles within, two souls long for peace--and a love that remains true.

Lt. Georgiana Taylor has everything she could want. A boyfriend back home, a loving family, and a challenging job as a flight nurse. But in July 1943, Georgie's cozy life gets more complicated when she meets pharmacist Sgt. John Hutchinson.

Hutch resents the lack of respect he gets as a noncommissioned serviceman and hates how the war keeps him from his fiancée. While Georgie and Hutch share a love of the starry night skies over Sicily, their lives back home are falling apart. Can they weather the hurt and betrayal? Or will the pressures of war destroy the fragile connection they've made?

It's a tumultuous time and both main characters come into the relationship with their own issues to work out. Sundin does a great job unfolding each of their internal journey's and weaving them into the main story. The historic details jump off the page bringing the reader along drawing them into World War II and all the drama of nursing in a combat zone. I enjoyed watching the story unfold brilliantly as if watching a Sunday matinée with Cable and Colbert. It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday.
