tasty tuesday ~ sweet and sticky chicken wings...

It's football season and in my house that means in-home tailgating. Chicken wings rank pretty high on the top ten list of football snack foods. My favorite are the sticky sweet wings and the hubster prefers the fried dipped in honey variety. Both of us like the buffalo variety especially when dipped in blue cheese dressing. So trying a new recipe is a somewhat risky venture in my house but I saw that this one used the crock pot and that was speaking to my tired lazy cook heart.

I made a few adaptations to the original recipe by lessening the amount of sugar. I like how it turned out. The original recipe just used the crock pot but I like my wings crispy so I added the final step of broiling them until browned to your liking.

The guys liked them so I will add them into the snack rotation. Sticky, sweet and finger liking good!

Sweet and Sticky Chicken Wings
recipe slightly adapted from "Taste of Home" Tailgating Issue

3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup ketchup
2 TB reduced sodium soy sauce
1 tsp chicken bouillon granules
16 chicken wings
4 TB cornstarch
1/2 cup cold water

1.  In a small saucepan, combine the first five ingredients.  Bring to a boil; cook and stir until sugar is dissolved.  Cut wings into three sections, discard wing tip sections.

2.  Transfer to a 3 qt slow cooker; add sugar mixture.  Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours or until chicken juices run clear.

3.  Transfer wings to a 9x13 pan and keep warm.  Skim fat from the cooking juices; transfer juices to a small saucepan.  Bring liquid to a boil.

4.  Combine cornstarch and water until smooth.  Gradually stir into the pan.  Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Spoon over chicken. Place under the broiler until browned. I like them crispy. Serve.
