the party continues...

a few of my favorite things...
Welcome my dear readers to day two of my blogiversay celebration!

I am loving those comments. Keep them coming. Today we are talking about homemaking skills specifically sewing. I learned to sew in high school and then refined my skills under my my mother-in-law tutelage in 1989 when I was pregnant with Jonathan and could not find a darn thing to wear. So I made my maternity wardrobe and then continued to sew for my children and extended family. I learned to do English Smocking and quilt. I have made pillows and curtains for my home. I love the the creative process of choosing the fabric and then creating a completely unique garment or home accessory. It's really quite fun.

Today's prize package is really cool. I am a huge fan of the oliver & s patterns for children's clothing. The directions are clear and the final product is always top notch. So I have included one of my favorite patterns the Swingset Tunic and Skirt. I know it's a girls pattern but most everyone I know has a daughter and I think girls clothes are easier to sew. Then there is a brand new copy of Weekend Sewing: More Than 40 Projects and Ideas for Inspired Stitching by the fabulously talented Heather Ross. It contains some wonderful projects for all levels of seamstresses.

Now if your not a sewer don't worry. This would be a great gift for someone in your life who does. So please do leave a comment and enter to win.

Here are the questions:
1. What is the first thing you ever made or remember being made for you?
2. If you could describe yourself as a fabric would you be velvet, cotton, wool or silk and why?
3. What sewing skill/technique would you like to learn?

The rules are the same as yesterday. One comment = one entry for the prize package. Comments open until 6 a.m. Monday, Novemebr 1, 2010.

If you have not entered yesterdays giveaway...there is still time. So pop on over and comment!

Happy Stitches,
Mary

  1. I forgot to add in my last comment: Congratulations on 3 blogging years and happy blog birthday! :)

    1. What is the first thing you ever made or remember being made for you?

My grandmother made Christmas & Easter dresses every year for my sister and I until we were teenagers. It was always fun to go to her house just before the holiday and see what she had made.

    2. If you could describe yourself as a fabric would you be velvet, cotton, wool or silk and why?

Cotton is for all seasons, is washable, and can be dressed up or down. That pretty much describes me in this time of life with young kids in the house! ;)

    3. What sewing skill/technique would you like to learn?

    Serging!

  2. Hi Mary, I cannot sew, but want to learn how. I inherited my husband's grandmother's sewing machine. She sewed even in her 90's! My mom sewed, but I chose to take guitar lessons instead of sewing like my sisters (it was the 70's :-) ). The first thing I remember having made for me was my First Communion Dress. It was beautiful and so special to me because my Mom made it. I would describe myself as cotton- comfortable and snuggly, with a soft touch. I'm also cotton because I will shrink if not handled with care! I'd like to learn just basic sewing skills, especially hemming so I don't have to pay a taylor anymore! I'd love to win this for my neighbor who sews, and has promised me she'd teach me to sew. She has a daughter who would look lovely in the pattern. LOVE your blog!
Google isn't letting me sign in, so I have to post this as Anonymous.

  3. Love the giveaways. The first thing I remember making was a pillow in home ec class. If I was a fabric I'd probably be cotton. Comforting and natural. I want to learn more with my serger.

  4. Hi again, Mary! As you know, I've never been a sewer, but a crafter. I did not inherit my mother's talent for sewing and I truly wish I had. She made every stitch of clothing I ever wore except for socks and underwear until I was old enough to complain. Every doll I ever got came with a complete wardrobe, all sewn by my mom. That being said:

    1. The first thing I truly have conscience memory of being made for me was a witch halloween costume the year right before I turned four. I remember this specifically, because my mom wanted me to be some kind of fairy princess and I really wanted the witch. She realized that I was NEVER going to give in to her wishes on this one, and made me an amazing witch costume.

    2. If I was a fabric, I think I would be some kind of blend of cotton and silk. I don't really know how to describe why.

    3. I would like to learn to sew, period. There are so many things for my house that I would love to be able to create. The few times my mom tried teaching me we wound up yelling at each other, so I think that I will need to take some classes on my own. Now that the boys are away at college, I could convert one of their bedrooms to a sewing/craft room!

  5. My first sewing project was handsewing a hand puppet (and making the papier mache head) in first grade, when they allowed needles in elementary school...
If I were a fabric, I'd be waxed cotton so I could travel in all kinds of weather.
What skill do I want to learn? Hmm... I have this slipcover to make for an ottoman, and have to learn to make the piping for the edge.

Congrats Mary on your Blogs anniversary! Keep the words flowing, baby!

  6. 1. I made a skirt. It was standard khaki and fit perfectly. Maybe I should dust off that sewing machine....

    2. I would be silk, but washable silk! Because pretty can be practical.

    3. Quilting. My grandma quilted.

  7. 1)I'm not a sewer but I did once sew a very poorly constructed pillow for a project!

    2) Cotton! I'm comfortable in the skin I'm in :)

    3) I would like to learn how to use a sewing machine. I am also hoping to knit and quilt. But one project at a time!

  8. 1. What is the first thing you ever made or remember being made for you?
My Mom made a lot of my clothes when I was little, mostly sundresses & My Grandma made me an afghan with my name down the middle.
    2. If you could describe yourself as a fabric would you be velvet, cotton, wool or silk and why? cotton, cool and comfortable;)
    3. What sewing skill/technique would you like to learn? Buttonholes, even with the sewing machine auto attachment they still do not come out right!

I majored in Fashion Merchandising and Design in college, I made a wool coat, a swim suit, and an evening dress my senior year.

  9. 1. What is the first thing you ever made or remember being made for you?
My mom made a bolero jacket to cover a $10 formal dress that had spaghetti straps and I wanted to dress more modestly.
    2. If you could describe yourself as a fabric would you be velvet, cotton, wool or silk and why? Cotton -- because the good stuff is soft and cuddly :)
    3. What sewing skill/technique would you like to learn? I am a very poor sewer. I would like to get the TIME to do anything but it is not in my cards in the near future....way too many things I am behind on!!

  10. 1) The first thing I made was in home ec. class, 7th grade. I made a lavender kitchen apron.

    2) Wool: I can be scratchy at times, but one of the dictionary definitions is "fine, soft, curly hair of a sheep." And since I have a head full of soft curls, I think wool fits!

    3) I'm not a seamstress, but I would love to make simple clothes for my DD & me, including adorable matching dresses or skirts!

  11. Here are the questions:
    1. What is the first thing you ever made or remember being made for you? Home ec class, 7th grade. We all made gym bags (eek, we had to change into terrible gym uniforms for PE...does anyone else remember those? But I digress...) My bag was pink gingham and I carried it all through high school.
    2. If you could describe yourself as a fabric would you be velvet, cotton, wool or silk and why? A cotton knit- classic, comfortable, dress it up, wear it casual...that's me...
    3. What sewing skill/technique would you like to learn? French seams...ooo la la.

A quilt in junior high in an after school quilting class. More recently though, when I started trying to teach myself to sew, a simple dress for my daughter.

    2. If you could describe yourself as a fabric would you be velvet, cotton, wool or silk and why?'

Cotton, because it's simple and low maintenance!

    3. What sewing skill/technique would you like to learn?

I just want to improve all around! My skills are so basic! I want to be able to look at something and be able to sew it!
